What if I just restarted?

My employer just got a new internet connection for testing purposes:
16mbps/2mbps Comcast connection
They currently have 3 T1 connections – two bonded and one for backup to our DR location. Sometime near April we should have a fully functioning 10mbps/10mbps fiber connection instead of 3 T1’s.

The IT staff likes having fast internet. So we (myself and A***i) connect a Linksys WRT54G to the comcast modem and set it up with the static IP/gateway/other information.
It tested OK. Last night when it was installed I got 19235kbps/3455kbps. Today we got 13201kbps/7640kbps. Awesome.

Each desk has two ethernet jacks handy – one for the phone and one for the computer. Good thing our phones have a built in bridge. Unfortunately the phones are 10/100. So I have my phone 10/100 on one port and my computer 10/100/1000 on the second port. My cubemate also has 2 ports: one for his computer and the other for “testing”.

So he wanted to connect one of his ethernet ports to the fast internet. No problem, right? He connects his main computer to the high speed connection…

A***i: “Oh wow”
Jason: “What? Is the internet that much faster?”
A***i: “Yeah, except for my email”
Jason: “You’ll have to either VPN in or setup your email with RPC”
A***i: “What if I just restarted?”
Jason: “I don’t think that will exactly work here as the connections are completely separate”

So then I showed him how the internet works. He’s a lot better now.
