My name is Jason, and I used to work as the Systems Administrator at a SMB company in Illinois until they fired me on the last day of my Honeymoon late 2009. I now work for another SMB company as their Network Administrator. I’ve been a SA/NA since 2005, and have been consulting with computers in one way or another since early 2000. I’m also starting up InsaneLan.com as another source of income. My current knowledge set is Macintosh pre 10.4, Windows post 2000, and some Linux. I’m MCP in XP, CSSA, CCENT, CCNA, and working on MCSE 2008, GIAC certs, and VCP for VMWare.
CompTia is a mostly a waste of time – I know many people with A+/Net+/Security+/Linux+ that don’t know the first thing about any of those technologies. Yes, 184pin DDR is different from 168pin SDRAM. Then again, many of the questions asked on Microsoft/Cisco/Sonicwall/VMWare tests are really not relevant in the real world.
I have a mortgage, a wife, several cars, several computers, and lots of electronic gear. I haven’t met many people with more computer gear than I have, but they do exist. If I don’t know how to do something I can either research it and figure it out or I know someone who already knows how to do whatever it is you’re looking for. Networking is fun.
